R. L. Barth’s newest volume of poems, That Mad Game: New Vietnam War Poems, is a flat-spine, 56-page book containing poems written since his 2021 volume Learning War (Broadstone Books, and Greenwich Exchange), along with a few earlier poems. Barth continues to explore new angles on the “Mad Game” of war—the title coming from Jonathan Swift’s line, “War, that mad game the world so loves to play.” Barth is widely recognized as the poet of the Vietnam War, and a producer of searing poems in a tradition dating back to antiquity—one that includes the great poets of World War I. This new book confirms his skill and depth.
